Refrigeration technology for the
food industry

Planning, plant engineering and service from a single source

We design and build the cooling supply for production, storage and logistics

KSI Kältetechnik designs the Refrigeration for the food industry and then builds the system itself. From cooling generation and distribution to control, designed for the temperature zones of your production and your warehouse.

For the Dennree fresh food centre in Töpen KSI built the energy centre of the central warehouse: cooling with ammonia (R717), 800 kW cooling capacity, plus heat pump, cold brine, warm brine and heating distribution from a single source.

In the food industry, cooling determines quality, shelf life and the value of the goods. A refrigeration system for food therefore has to do one thing above all: hold temperatures reliably, day and night, even if a component fails.

Four requirements

What we measure every system against

Stable temperatures in every zone

Production, cooling zones, deep freezing and storage each need their own temperatures. The cooling supply has to keep all zones within the target range at the same time, even with frequent door openings, incoming goods and defrost cycles.

Reliability for the goods

If the cooling fails, all stored goods are quickly at stake. Redundant pumps and chillers, reliable alarms and fast service are therefore part of the design from the start.

Hygiene and documentation

Food businesses work to strict hygiene rules. The refrigeration system records temperatures without gaps and reports deviations immediately. This is the basis for your company's HACCP documentation.

Energy in continuous operation

In the food industry, cooling runs around the clock and is one of the largest cost items. Controlled capacity at part load and the use of waste heat noticeably reduce energy consumption.

What we use for this

What we build: food refrigeration as one system

Normal cooling, deep freezing, storage and heat demand are connected. That is why we plan generation, distribution, control and monitoring as one overall system instead of placing individual cooling points side by side.

Cooling supply for cooling zones and storage

Cold brine or chilled water, generated centrally and distributed to production, cold rooms and storage areas. Each zone receives the temperature and capacity it needs.

Deep freezing and blast freezing

For frozen storage, blast freezers and rapid chillers we plan the right cooling generation, for example CO₂ systems for low temperatures alongside central normal cooling.

Redundant cooling generation

Duplicated pumps and several chillers keep the cooling running even during maintenance or a fault. This keeps the cold chain unbroken.

Heat from the refrigeration system

The heat released by the refrigeration system can be used via a heat pump for heating, warm brine or process heat. Cooling and heating then come from one central plant.

Control, monitoring and remote access

A central control system connects cooling, heating and distribution. Via secure remote access we analyse faults quickly and adjust operation, often without a site visit.

Natural refrigerants

Ammonia for large capacities, CO₂ for deep freezing, propane for compact chillers. Natural refrigerants are not affected by the F-gas Regulation and secure operation in the long term.

From practice

Dennree fresh food centre, Töpen

Ammonia cooling generation in the energy centre of the Dennree fresh food centre in Töpen

For the new central warehouse in Töpen KSI realised an energy centre that combines cooling and heat generation as well as the complete energy distribution. Switchgear, control technology and the connection to the building management system were part of the project.

  • Application Energy centre for a central warehouse
  • Refrigerant R717 (ammonia)
  • Cooling capacity 800 kW
  • Heating capacity 400 kW via heat pump
  • Redundancy 100 % of all pumps
  • Piping approx. 3,000 m

Our project sizes

Where we work

We work where cooling is supplied centrally: production plants, cold and frozen stores, fresh food centres and logistics sites with their own plant room, several temperature zones and high availability requirements. Typically in the three- to four-digit kilowatt range.

Where the boundary lies

A single cold room or a refrigerated cabinet is best sourced from a local refrigeration contractor. As soon as several zones, central cooling generation or redundancy come into play, it is worth talking to us.

From temperature profile to concept

How we develop a robust concept from operating data, temperature zones and load profiles is explained on our planning page. Which natural refrigerant suits which system is shown in our overview.

New warehouse, production expansion or refurbishment of an existing system?

We look at temperature zones, loads, availability requirements and the existing installation, and develop a concept that suits your operation.
