Specialised refrigeration system for sensitive production areas in clinical operations
KSI Kältetechnik realised, at the Großhadern University Hospital in Munich, a specialised refrigeration system for the production of radioactively charged medications. The system was designed for use in a sensitive medical environment and has ensured reliable refrigeration supply for radiopharmaceutical production since 2013.
Planning and system concept: The refrigeration system was built with a redundant system to ensure continuous cooling of the equipment required for medication production. Due to the confined space at the installation site, the implementation was carried out with a technically precisely coordinated system solution.
Supply reliability: Two redundant chilled water pump systems, aligned to a buffer tank, secure the operation of the system. The system is supplemented by ventilation units for fresh air supply as well as by a fault power connection provided by the hospital.
Technical features: The system operates with the refrigerant R-410A and was specifically tailored to the spatial and operational requirements within the hospital. The aim was efficient and, at the same time, reliable cooling capacity under the given conditions.
Challenges and solution: A particular challenge was the confined installation location within the building. Installation under these conditions required careful planning and execution. Despite these constraints, the installation was completed successfully without disrupting operations or compromising safety.
Maintenance and operation: Since commissioning, the refrigeration system has been operating around the clock and has functioned without interruption ever since. This is based on a consistent maintenance routine that keeps the system permanently in optimal condition.
