Specialised refrigeration system for sensitive production areas in hospital settings
KSI Kältetechnik installed a specialised refrigeration system at the Großhadern University Hospital in Munich for the production of radioactively labelled medicines. The system was designed for use in a sensitive medical environment and has been ensuring a reliable supply of cold for radiopharmaceutical production since 2013.
Planning and system design: The refrigeration system was designed as a redundant system to ensure continuous cooling of the equipment required for the manufacture of medicines. Due to the limited space available at the installation site, the project was carried out using a technically precise and tailored system solution.
Security of supply: Two redundant chilled water pump systems, connected to a buffer tank, ensure the plant’s operation. The system is supplemented by ventilation units to supply fresh air, as well as an emergency power supply connection provided by the hospital.
Technical features: The system uses the refrigerant R-410A and was specifically tailored to the spatial and operational requirements within the hospital. The aim was to achieve efficient yet reliable cooling capacity under the given conditions.
Challenges and solutions: A particular challenge was the confined installation space within the building. Carrying out the installation under these conditions required careful planning and execution. Despite these constraints, the installation was successfully completed without disrupting operations or compromising safety.
Maintenance and operation: Since it was commissioned, the refrigeration system has been operating round the clock and has functioned without interruption ever since. This is made possible by a rigorous maintenance programme, which ensures that the system is kept in optimum condition at all times.
