Decision template: Use of different refrigerants
Construction measure: New construction and partial refurbishment of heating and cooling systems as well as energy optimization to minimize the CO2 footprint in line with the agenda for CO2 neutrality by 2040.
This decision template deals with the selection of suitable refrigerants for the planned measures in order to maximize the efficiency of the systems and at the same time reduce the ecological footprint.
1. status / concept description
Institutional investors, project developers and real estate operators are currently facing numerous challenges. The aim is to find a balance between demand, diversification and the growing requirements for energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions, while at the same time reviewing the volatile cost structure and meeting the ecological requirements of the amended EnEfG (Federal Law Gazette 2023 I No.309 of 13.11.2023) must be implemented.
The technical innovations of recent years in the area of heating and cooling generation and energy distribution systems are limited, which makes it difficult to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of at least 1.25 for an entire building.
Many companies recognize their responsibility towards the environment and their investors. New targets need to be set, particularly for project development in existing buildings. The agenda for CO2 neutrality by 2040 and the concept of “green investment” require innovative solutions and a pioneering spirit that combines long-term development strategies with the essential economic aspects.
This decision paper is intended to contribute to the development of a technical standard in the area of energy centers (heat/cold generation).

Maritim Hotel Amsterdam
Installation and planning of the refrigeration systems in the "Y-Towes" hotel tower in Amsterdam by Union Investment and Maritim based on natural refrigerants.
Uponor
Conversion of an existing system to natural refrigerants at UPONOR Germany.
In addition to the 800 KW cooling capacity required, a system for heat recovery and energy saving was also installed.
Landshut Hospital
Refrigeration of a commercial kitchen based on natural refrigerants. There are two levels in the refrigeration center with blast chillers, cold rooms, etc. One level is responsible for normal cooling, the second level for deep-freezing.
