Project description

In 2013, we carried out a pioneering project at the University Hospital Großhadern, which involved the installation of a specialized refrigeration system. This facility is crucial for the production of radioactively charged drugs, which play a particularly important role in cancer diagnostics within human medicine.

Technical features and operation
The refrigeration system was designed with a redundant system to ensure continuous cooling of the equipment required for the production of medicines. Due to the limited space available at the installation site, we operate the system with a classic refrigerant R-410A. This enables efficient and reliable cooling performance under the given circumstances.

Our refrigeration system has two redundant cold water pump systems, which are aligned to a buffer tank, and offers a cooling capacity of 330 KW and a heating capacity of 80 KW per machine. The ventilation units, which are also part of the system, supply the laboratories with the necessary fresh air. The system is also equipped with a fault reserve connection, which is provided directly by the hospital.

Challenges and solutions
One of the biggest challenges in implementing this project was the structural conditions at the university hospital. The need to dismantle existing structures followed by careful reassembly required precise planning and execution. Despite these difficulties, we were able to successfully complete the installation without disrupting operations or compromising security.

Maintenance and operational success

Since commissioning, the refrigeration system has been in operation around the clock and has worked without interruption ever since. This success is based on a strict maintenance routine, which we carry out regularly to keep the system in optimum condition.
About LMU Großhadern
The Großhadern Clinic, also known as the Großhadern Campus of the Munich University Hospital, is a central medical complex in Munich with 1210 beds. It is part of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and, together with the institutes and faculties in the surrounding area, forms the largest hospital complex in Munich.
The Radiopharmacy Center of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Nuclear Medicine of the LMU in Großhadern offers the possibility to produce radioactive drugs according to the GMP standard (Good Manufacturing Practice) in accordance with the current radiation protection and drug guidelines.

The radiopharmacy building built in 2013 with its own cyclotron and in-house pharmaceutical production is the basis for providing biomarkers for diagnostics and radiotherapeutics for patient-individualized therapy as required and in the highest quality.

This ensures the highest possible level of patient care. The Radiopharmacy Center offers the best conditions for conducting clinical studies as well as preclinical and basic radiopharmaceutical research.
